Gmail has a great feature that Google just made infinitely more useful
GMAIL has an incredibly useful feature that just got infinitely better thanks to a new update from Google.
Gmail is Google’s email client that is hugely popular in both personal and workspace environments.
One of the reasons for Gmail’s success is its consistent stream of updates that bring new features.
Gmail is renowned for its Smart Reply feature that suggests automatic responses to emails that Google insists saves people valuable time overall.
Smart Reply arrived back in 2015 and harnesses the power of machine learning to display relevant reactions.
Discussing the feature, Google said: “Smart Reply suggests up to three responses based on the emails you get. For those emails that only need a quick response, it can take care of the thinking and save precious time spent typing.
“And for those emails that require a bit more thought, it gives you a jump start so you can respond right away.
“There’s actually a lot going on behind the scenes to make Smart Reply work. Inbox uses machine learning to recognise emails that need responses and to generate the natural language responses on the fly.
“And much like how Inbox gets better when you report spam, the responses you choose (or don’t choose!) help improve future suggestions.”
Smart Reply is certainly one of Gmail’s best features.
But now Google is making the tool more useful by bringing it to Hangouts Chat.
Hangouts Chat is Google’s messaging platform for workplace environments that easily allows employees to communicate with each other.
The move appears to be part of an effort from the Mountain View firm to make chatting on Hangouts more simple and intuitive.
Explaining the decision, the American tech behemoth stated: “We’re bringing Smart Reply to Hangouts Chat so you can respond to teammates quickly and move projects forward more efficiently, in less time. This launch is part of our ongoing effort to bring intelligent, assistive writing tools to all of G Suite.
“Smart Reply in Hangouts Chat uses sophisticated machine learning intelligence, similar to that behind Smart Reply in Gmail. Our technology recognises which messages most likely need responses, and proposes up to 3 different replies.
“Once you’ve selected one, you can send it immediately or edit your response starting with the Smart Reply text. Please note, this feature is currently only available in English.”
It is also worth noting the update only brings Smart Reply to Hangouts Chat and not the version of the software within Gmail itself.
The new feature is rolling out right now.
