Volkswagen teasing commercial sector with its latest electric concept
I.D. Buzz Cargo Concept is an electric cargo van concept for fleet buyers, small contractors, and amateur motorcycle racers, of course
What is it? It’s hard to decide whether the I.D. Buzz is the sexiest cargo van ever invented or the most practical cargo van ever invented. Oh, hell, let’s just fawn over it completely and say it’s both.
Why is it important? Well, it’s electric, which makes it part of the emissions-reducing hype sweeping the automotive world. Volkswagenclaims they could deliver 550 kilometres of range from its 111 kilowatt-hour battery, so it appears it may even be practical. Those more concerned with value and needing less range can look forward to a smaller, more economical 48-kWh version that is also proposed. The concept — and there is absolutely no word on whether this will ever hit production — even incorporates a solar panel into the roof. It may only add about 13 kilometres of range per day, assuming maximum sunlight, but it will get the enviro-weenies all a-twitter. And, not to be left out of any high-tech trend, Volkswagen’s cute little cargo hauler has an “I.D. Pilot” that is said to be fully autonomous.
Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Cargo Concept
But none of that is why I personally am excited. As you can see, this particular concept is all dressed up as a work vehicle, the I.D. Buzz having been “reimagined” as a support vehicle for the I.D. R Pikes Peak record holder. Take a look at some of these detail photos and the most notable thing about this particular concept is that its electric-powered MEB architecture has an amazingly low floor pan which allows an amazingly complete workshop but also the possibility of standing in the rear cargo area without the need for a sky high roof. Volkswagen says the lack of an internal combustion engine adds seven cubic feet of additional spare-parts-carrying space up front and, again, the electric architecture has enough juice for high-performance work tools thanks to its 230-volt/16-amp electrical sockets. The I.D. Buzz is every amateur motorcycle racer’s wet dream.
When is it coming? Sadly, the I.D. Buzz is still a concept, but Volkswagen can’t make it soon enough as far as I am concerned.
