It’s confession time: I’ll admit, I’m a stomach sleeper. Despite studies that show that sleeping on your stomach can lead to back and neck pain, I normally find myself drifting off to sleep face down on my pillow.

Though I’ve enjoyed using the Original Casper Pillow for the last year or so, I recently started noticing some discomfort in the mornings after crunching up the left side of my neck and shoulder overnight. It got me thinking that it might be time to switch things up in favour of a more ergonomic sleeping position, and maybe even a new pillow.

When I was offered the chance to test out one of Canadian bedding company Polysleep’s pillows, it was the perfect opportunity to try and get my sleep back on track.

SHOP IT: Polysleep, from $92 (originally from $115)

What is it?

Handcrafted at the company’s manufacturing headquarters in Montreal, The Polysleep Pillow is a supportive option that’s made up of four layers of memory foam. Its customizable design can be adjusted from 2″ up to 9″ inches in height, depending on the number of layers you decide to use.

All four layers of foam are certified by the CertiPUR-US® program, meaning they are made without the use of ozone depleting chemicals and produce low VOC (volatile organic compound) emission for superior indoor air quality. The pillow’s exterior is also made from 100 per cent cotton for breathability.

Available in Standard or King sizes, the pillows start at $115 but are on sale now from $92.

First impressions

When the pillow first arrived, I was fully expecting to have to air them out for a day or two, as I’ve previously had to do with other memory foam bedding. Surprisingly, I didn’t find that there was any scent at all following the unboxing — I was able to open it up and use it to sleep on that very same night.

Part one of my test involved using the pillow to prop myself up and read in bed, and I was already impressed by how much support it provided to my lower back. It felt just as cloud-like yet supportive while I slept, and the biggest surprise I found was that the pillow’s added height kept me from rolling onto my stomach overnight. I’ve been using all four of the memory foam inserts, and since they seem to be improving my sleep I’ll probably stick with the pillow’s full height rather than playing around with it.

I’ve now been using The Polysleep Pillow for about a week, and can say that I’ll be keeping it around instead of my old Casper pillow.

What others are saying

The Polysleep Pillow has racked up a 4.7-star rating from more than 500 customer reviews, with shoppers praising its comfort and customizable effects.

“The ability to customize this pillow to your liking is definitely the selling point,” reads one five star review. “It feels plush with the shredded foam around the layers inside and it’s very comfortable. Honestly one of the best decisions I made in my life.”

“After a couple nights of fine tuning the different levels I found the perfect one for me,” added another. “As a stomach sleeper this was a game changer.”

Some reviewers have found that this pillow was too firm for their needs, since it does use layers of dense memory foam for support. If you’re used to a soft pillow that really lets your head sink in, you may want to pass on this version. If you’re still unsure, the brand also offers a 30-day trial period, so if you do decide to test it out for yourself you have a whole month to decide whether this pillow is the right fit for you.

Verdict

While I can’t say for sure how the memory foam will hold up to prolonged use after only a week, I have definitely enjoyed using my Polysleep Pillow for the short time that I’ve had it. It’s been a great addition to my nighttime routine, and with its current sale price of 20 per cent off, there’s never been a better time to give it a try.
