Apple Watch 3 to Launch in September: Rumors, Specs, Features

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is rumored to be working on its third-generation smartwatch – the Apple Watch 3.

Rumors suggest that the Apple Watch 3 will feature significant design changes. It is also said to come with an improved battery life.

Further, the Cupertino-based tech giant might add a smart band and a camera to the third-generation smartwatch. The Watch 3 is likly to be unveiled in September, along with the iPhone 8.

The Watch 3 is said to come with a micro-LED screen, according to the reports.

The screen size will remain 1.65 inches and no changes are expected in the size or shape of the screen. The resolution is also expected to remain at 390 x 312.

Micro-LEDs are aimed at small, low-energy devices such as smartwatches and smartphones. They offer reduced energy requirements compared to conventional LCDs. Micro-LEDs offer higher brightness than OLEDs,thanks to conventional GaN LED technology.

Meanwhile, the third-generation wearable is rumored to feature a smart band. A new patent filed by Apple includes a smart fabric wristband designed to show the time and simple notifications.

Recently, we saw some reports from reliable sources that Apple is working to improve the camera technology in its upcoming devices including the iPhone 8.

So, the rumors mill is suggesting that the iPhone maker will also add a camera to the Watch 3 for taking selfies and making FaceTime calls.

Apple Watch 3 Battery

A report from the Chinese-language Economic Daily News claimed that Taiwan-based Quanta will manufacture the Watch 3. Quanta previously produced Apple’s first and second-generation smartwatch.

Citing sources with knowledge of Quanta’s plans, the newspaper reported that the manufacturer’s “main task” is to improve the battery life of the smartwatch, Mac Rumors reported.

The report also claimed that there won’t be major hardware changes to the smartwatch.

Apple Watch Sales in Q4

Latest data shows that the Watch Series 1 and Series 2 have been selling well.


Latest data from research firm IDC said in a report that Apple shipped an estimated 4.6 million watches in the fourth quarter of 2016, the company’s “best quarter ever” in the wearables market, Mac Rumors reported.

The iPhone maker’s share of the wearables market was an estimated 13.6%, down from 14.1% in the year-ago quarter.

During the fourth quarter, wearables market leader Fitbit experienced one of its “largest declines ever,” according to the report. The firm shipped an estimated 6.5 million fitness trackers in the quarter, versus 8.4 million in the year-ago quarter. Its market share dropped from 29% to 19.2%, IDC said.
